The intended audience of this post is the undecided female who is maybe left leaning, or maybe right leaning, who believes some of the statistics on women, but isn’t sure about how to deal with them, who wants to be a feminist, but is afraid of the new wave of feminism.

If the next statement is a “DUH” for you, then congratulations, you get it. Here’s a cookie.*

Libertarianism is for women.

I mean, libertarianism is for individuals, but considering the statistical make-up of those who publicly call themselves libertarian, I feel like it needs to be said more directly. Libertarianism is for any group that has at any point been legally deemed less-than.** Which is A LOT of different groups when we go through history. Even the short history of the United States. I can’t speak as a member of many of those groups, but I can speak as a woman. And I say that libertarianism is for women.

Here are the concerns that I have encountered recently in podcasts, blogs, and Facebook posts, or just been thinking about, where I want to respond with, “THE ANSWER IS LIBERTY, YOU BIG DUMB IDIOT [or another politically incorrect label, just because I’m irritated and in my car/by myself and can yell whatever I want].”

Worried about the prosecution rate of rapists? That even with overwhelming evidence the captain of the football team gets off seemingly scot-free? Libertarianism would allow for a competitive arbitration system which means that even if captain-of-the-football-team’s Dad donated the Main Street fountain (or any other ridiculous excuse for treating him differently), you could go to a judge that wasn’t his college roommate.

Worried about the rate of rape in minority and low-income communities? Worried about the rate of rape by police officers? Of course you’re not, no modern feminist ever talks about those statistics. Libertarianism believes that everyone deserves to not have force used against them.

Worried about the wage-gap between men and women? Libertarianism will tell you straight-up that your wage is directly related to your choices and the value you bring to the world. Also, that the wage-gap (as presented in mainstream media) is a myth.

Worried about sexism that still exists in the world? Libertarianism will let you prove yourself, treat you like an equal, and won’t say that you need help from society in order to be just as good as men. And therefore won’t create any special programs for small minded bigots to use to hate you more. [Disclaimer: I hate special programs, but I don’t hate the people who benefit from them. I hate the people who implement them and then tell the beneficiaries that they need them and there is no way they will survive in this world without them.]

Worried about all the women, from babies to grandmothers getting bombed in other countries? No, you probably aren’t. You probably don’t even know about it. Mainstream feminism doesn’t care about them. Libertarianism does. Libertarianism thinks that those women are individuals just like you and me, and deserve to not get killed.

Worried about immigrant and minority women? Don’t be. Those women are hard workers who came to the United States to make a better life for themselves because they are strong, smart, and capable. Libertarianism would just lower the barriers and allow them to take care of their families that much easier. And therefore, let you do the same.

Think that there is no difference between men and women, that it’s all a societal manipulation? Libertarianism believes in equal opportunity. Whether men and women are the same or not, you have the same opportunity to succeed and the same opportunity to fail.

Think that men and women are inherently different, but neither is inherently better or worse than the other? Libertarianism believes in equal opportunity. Whether men and women are the same or not, you have the same opportunity to succeed and the same opportunity to fail.

Think that men and women are different, and one is better than the other? Libertarianism believes in equal opportunity. Whether men and women are the same or not, you have the same opportunity to succeed and the same opportunity to fail.

Think that men and women aren’t the only gender and everyone deserves the same rights? Libertarianism believes in equal opportunity. Whether you are a man, woman, or any other gender, you have the same opportunity to succeed and the same opportunity to fail.

Libertarianism is for women. Because women are individuals. And libertarianism is for the individual.

**I am a part of one other group: I am a private citizen. In today’s world, unless you work for and support the government, you are less-than. But that’s a whole other can-of-worms.
